There have been zero serious public disorder incidents at the 2026 World Cup to date with no problems between rival fan groups who have shown maximum respect for their opponents in both victory and defeat. The story has been the same since the tournament got underway last month but the Atlanta semi final meeting between Argentina–England comes with layers of history and tension.

A match-up between the two nations always carries a great deal of sporting, political and social rivalry and this will be accentuated in Atlanta with a place in the 2026 World Cup final at stake.

Local authorities, in some cities with up to five different police forces, have kept everything under control and for the first time in the competition, more than 1,200 police officers will be deployed in and around the city and especially around the stadium, starting from the Olympic Park, the Fan Fest area and near the stadium. A further 600 private security personnel will be used to monitor everything inside the Mercedes Benz Arena in downtown.

At any World Cup stadium, it can be complicated to totally segregate fan groups due to ticketing and an England vs Argentina clash brings together two of the best supported teams at the event both famed for their vocal and passionate levels of support.

‘Nothing more than a football match’

Argentine head coach Lionel Scaloni himself wanted to remind everyone that Wednesday’s game in Atlanta is nothing more than a football match, a remark that was very well intended, but his words were not well received by a certain sector of Argentine society.

The last meeting between the ‘Three Lions’ and the ‘Albiceleste’ at a World Cup dates back to 2002, which ended in an English victory with David Beckham on target for England as they recorded a 1-0 win. In total, the two teams have met five times in World Cup competition.
