France vs Colombia: international friendly preview

As France gear up for this summer’s bid to win a third world title, Didier Deschamps’ men claimed a prestige victory on Thursday, goals by Kylian Mbappé and Hugo Ekitiké earning a 2-1 win over Brazil in Foxborough, Massachusetts. Mbappé’s first-half finish moved the Real Madrid star to within a goal of equalling the French men’s team’s scoring record, held by Olivier Giroud with 57.

Now on a run of eight games without defeat, the French face a Colombia team that won the nations’ previous meeting.

In March 2018, four months before France lifted the World Cup in Russia, Colombia came from two goals down to triumph 3-2 in a Paris friendly, thanks to strikes by Luis Muriel, Radamel Falcao and Juan Fernando Quintero. That was the teams’ fifth meeting; France currently lead the series 3-2.

The Colombians, who are preparing to make their World Cup return after missing out on Qatar 2022, head to Maryland on the back of a 2-1 friendly defeat to Croatia on Thursday. Jhon Arias gave Los Cafeteros the lead in Orlando, Florida, only for Luka Vuskovic and Igor Matanovic to secure a come-from-behind win for the Croats.
