In a match that closes out Group A, Mexico takes on Czechia on Wednesday - a clash that marks El Tri’s 35th all-time meeting with UEFA opposition at a men’s World Cup.

A three-decade wait for a win

Mexico’s first-ever World Cup encounter with a European national team came at Uruguay 1930, when El Tri fell 4-1 to France at the inaugural men’s finals. After that match, the team played a further seven tournament games against UEFA opposition, losing six and drawing one.

Following that eight-game stretch, Mexico finally earned its first win, beating Czechoslovakia at Chile 1962. From that tournament through USA 1994, the North Americans played 14 matches against UEFA nations, compiling a record of four wins, five draws and five defeats.

From France 1998 through Qatar 2022, Mexico played another 12 World Cup matches against European teams, posting four wins, four draws and four losses.
