The Mexico captain stands above the rest at the World Cup, literally
Javier Aguirre has handed the captain’s armband to the towering center back for Mexico’s opening game of the World Cup against South Africa.

The World Cup is officially underway.
The day soccer fans around the world have been waiting for has finally arrived, and for the third time in its history, Mexico is hosting the tournament. The opening match takes place at the iconic Estadio Ciudad de México against South Africa, reviving memories of the nations’ 1-1 draw in the opening game of the 2010 World Cup.
Any lingering questions surrounding Mexico’s lineup were answered when head coach Javier Aguirre unveiled the starting XI he believes should lead the country’s latest World Cup campaign.
There were no major surprises in the lineup itself, but one decision immediately stood out: the choice of captain.
Aguirre has handed the armband to César Montes, the 6-foot-5 (1.95-meter) Lokomotiv Moscow center back, whose commanding physical presence has made him one of Mexico’s most important defenders.
The decision came as a surprise to some observers given the absence of veteran leaders such as Edson Álvarez and Guillermo Ochoa from the starting lineup.

Montes gets the nod over other locker-room leaders
Another notable aspect of Aguirre’s decision is that Montes was chosen ahead of other experienced figures on the field, including Johan Vásquez and Raúl Jiménez.
With a new captain leading the way, Mexico begins another World Cup journey filled with hope and ambition, aiming to make history and finally break through the quarterfinal barrier that has long eluded the national team.
