Weather scare for Portugal as police intervene and players are forced off the beach
A thunderstorm in Palm Beach disrupted Portugal’s preparations, forcing the cancellation of training and a scheduled press conference.

Portugal’s players were unable to enjoy another relaxing afternoon at the beach in Palm Beach, Florida, after a powerful thunderstorm dramatically disrupted the team’s plans.

What began as free time quickly turned into a weather emergency. According to A Bola, police moved in to secure the area and clear the beach as severe weather approached.
Leave the water immediately
João Félix, Pedro Neto, Rúben Dias, Bernardo Silva, João Cancelo, Trincão, Samu Costa and several other Portugal players had been swimming in the ocean when they were instructed to leave the water immediately.
As conditions deteriorated, the police presence increased, and head coach Roberto Martínez even came down to the beach himself to assess the situation.
The disruption did not end there.
Portugal’s scheduled training session was later called off because of the storm, while a planned pre-practice press conference was also canceled amid concerns over the severe weather.
Heavy rain and lightning forced the Portuguese delegation to seek shelter on the team bus as they traveled toward the training facility. Players and staff remained inside for a period while officials monitored conditions.
Portugal head back to the hotel
Eventually, the session was abandoned altogether, with Portugal returning to its hotel rather than attempting to train in the dangerous weather.
The incident serves as another reminder of the challenges teams can face during a summer World Cup in North America, where thunderstorms can develop rapidly and trigger strict safety protocols, particularly when lightning is detected nearby.
For Portugal, the focus now shifts back to preparation as Roberto Martínez’s side looks to avoid any further disruptions ahead of its next World Cup assignment.
Portugal play DR Congo on Wednesday at 1 p.m. in their opening game in Group K.
