Donald Trump will serve as the host of the marquee event. So far, however, the U.S. president has not publicly weighed in on the matchup from a sporting perspective.
Trump has never identified himself as a supporter of any particular soccer team, though he does have an interesting personal connection to the sport. In his younger years, Trump played as a defender for the New York Military Academy (NYMA) team.
And his youngest son, Barron Trump, is a devoted soccer fan. As a child, Barron was an admitted Arsenal supporter and even spent time in the D.C. United youth system.
Will Donald Trump support Spain or Argentina in today’s World Cup final?
Officially, Trump has remained neutral ahead of the game in East Rutherford, where he will be responsible for presenting the trophy to the champions.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed this week that the president will attend the match, but she declined to reveal which team he might be rooting for, joking: “I’m sure he’ll have a fun answer for you.”
Beyond the soccer field, Trump recently welcomed Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami to the White House. At the same time, he has repeatedly criticized Spain’s government over its level of defense spending, calling the country a “terrible partner” and even suggesting that trade ties should be reconsidered.
