Update:

France’s Clément Turpin will be tasked with ensuring the likes of Erling Haaland, Jude Bellingham, and Harry Kane are on their best behavior after being named referee for Norway’s 2026 World Cup quarterfinal against England on Saturday.

The 44-year-old will be assisted by compatriots Nicolas Danos and Benjamin Pages. Fellow Frenchman Jérome Brisard has been appointed VAR, with Spain’s Alejandro Hernández serving as the fourth official.

Turpin’s World Cup assignments

Turpin, who is officiating at his third World Cup, takes charge of his fourth game at the 2026 tournament and his second involving England. He was previously in the middle for the Three Lions’ 4-2 win over Croatia in the group stage.

The French whistler also refereed the goalless draw between Paraguay and Australia in Group D, along with Colombia’s round-of-32 victory over Ghana.

A familiar face from the Champions League

Turpin, a FIFA-listed referee since 2010, will be familiar to fans of the Champions League, a competition in which he has overseen 62 games since the start of the 2014-15 season. His most high-profile appointment came in May 2022, when he was selected for the Champions League final between Real Madrid and Liverpool in Paris.

As well as the World Cup and the Champions League, Turpin has been part of the officiating teams at the last three European Championships.

Although you’ll normally find him running the rule over a Ligue 1 game most weekends, he has also refereed matches in several other countries, including Switzerland, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Bulgaria.

Will Norway and England be happy to see Turpin?

Turpin has previously taken charge of eight England matches, with the Three Lions winning five, drawing one, and losing two.

He has officiated one Norway game, a 2-0 defeat to the Netherlands in a 2022 World Cup qualifier.
