A devastating knee injury ends his season and raises major doubts over his short-term future at club and international level.

A devastating knee injury ends his season and raises major doubts over his short-term future at club and international level.

Xavi Simons was stretchered off this Saturday during Tottenham’s game against Wolverhampton, and from the very first moment, the position of his knee and his clear signs of pain pointed to the worst possible outcome. That diagnosis has now been confirmed: a torn anterior cruciate ligament. The player himself later announced he will miss the remainder of the Premier League season as well as the 2026 World Cup. Tottenham confirmed the news hours after the midfielder’s own statement, marking a major blow for both the club and the Netherlands national team.

Simons shared a message on Instagram in which he appeared visibly devastated by the injury that will prevent him from helping Tottenham and will rule him out of the tournament in the United States this summer.

Communication from Xavi Simons

“They say life can be cruel and today it feels that way. My season has come to an abrupt end and I’m just trying to process it. Honestly, I’m heartbroken. None of it makes sense. All I’ve wanted to do is fight for my team and now the ability to do that has been snatched away from me… along with the World Cup.”

Tottenham later issued an official statement confirming the extent of the injury.

“We can confirm that Xavi Simons has ruptured the Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) in his right knee. The 23-year-old suffered the injury during the second half of our Premier League fixture at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.Xavi will undergo surgery in the coming weeks and, following that, will then begin his rehabilitation with our medical team.Everyone at Tottenham Hotspur sends Xavi our love and support - we will be with him every step of the way.”

The Dutch international also shared the emotional impact of the setback in the same message.

“Representing my country this summer… just gone. It’ll take time to find peace with this, but I’ll continue to be the best team-mate I can be. I have no doubt that together we’ll win this fight. I’ll walk this path now, guided by faith, with strength, with resilience, with belief, as I count down the days to getting back out there. Be patient with me.”

The 23-year-old had been one of Tottenham’s key attacking leaders, and the injury arrives at a critical moment. Not only does it derail his short-term objectives, but it also casts uncertainty over his trajectory at a pivotal stage in his career. If the north London side were to drop into the Championship, Simons could face significant challenges in securing a move back to the elite level given the lengthy recovery period ahead.
