Liga Title Challenge
Barcelona and Real Madrid to decide LaLiga title
Just two teams can win LaLiga on the final day of the season, and it's Barcelona's to lose. Atlético dropped out of the title race losing to Levante.
Atlético blinked first. Simeone's side were joint top coming into the penultimate round of matches in LaLiga, and were provisionally leading the table when Torres scored early on against Levante. But incredibly the wheels came flying off Atlético's title challenge as the already relegated Levante scored twice to beat their illustrious rivals and dump Atlético out of the title race, leaving only Barcelona and Real Madrid with possibilities of landing the league title 2015/16.
Barcelona cruised to a five-nil win over Espanyol and they are sitting pretty as it stands, a point ahead of Real Madrid (88 points to 87), if they beat already safe Granada on the last day of the season they'll be crowned champions. Few would bet against them doing just that.
But if Barcelona did drop points then Real Madrid will need to win away to Deportivo to take advantage. The Galician side are also already safe. Real Madrid today kept themselves in the title hunt with a 3-2 win over Valencia. Two goals from Ronaldo and a controverial one from Benzema were just enough for Zidane's men, though Valencia had dangerous chances to level it at the end.
As it stands: Barcelona 88 points, Real Madrid 87 and out of the title race Atleti 85. Atlético have slipped into third spot, but are still guaranteed a group stage spot in the Champions League, with the top three in Spain going straight into the group stages. Villarreal have claimed the fourth spot in the table, giving them a qualifying spot to get into the group stages.
Just one game left, three points to play for… along with the Liga title 2015/16.
