José Mourinho wants Atlético Madrid's Andrea Berta
The Portuguese coach will continue his rebuilding job at Old Trafford this January and is looking to one of Diego Simeone's key men to bolster his recruitment, reports say. Ajax - Manchester United live
Atlético Madrid's sporting director, Andrea Berta, has been on the radar for several of Europe's big clubs and reports on Wednesday have put Manchester United at the top of that queue.
Helping the Old Trafford rebuild
According to the Italian football agent, Dario Canovi, compatriot Berta could be in line to replace Ed Woodward as the man in charge of future transfer policy, say the Metro. Canovi highlights the value of the director - who was responsible for Jan Oblak and Jose Gimenez coming to the Calderón - moving to join Seria A side Inter but accepts that a tempting offer from the mega-rich Premier League could make the difference.
This is not the first time that José Mourinho has been linked to Berta. Back before he even joined the Red Devils there were rumours that he may arrive with a believed transfer guru in tow. If United, or any other side, is able to convince the Italian to leave the Spanish capital then they would hope to do so ahead of the January window opening.
The Premier League challenge
Although Mourinho had stated in the summer that four identified players were enough to complete the squad he needed to challenge for honours, the early part of the season has raised some doubts. It is expected that United will flex their financial muscle once again sooner rather than later.
