The Red Bull Salzburg coach, who was previously at Barça youth, Watford and Brighton, has emerged as the primary candidate to take over at La Rosaleda.

Málaga keen on Salzburg coach Óscar García to replace Juande

Málaga have sounded out Red Bull Salzburg coach Óscar García about taking over the reins at La Rosaleda following the sudden departure of Juande Ramos.

The 43-year-old former Barça youth, Watford, Brighton and Maccabi Tel Aviv tactician has emerged as the primary target for Málaga sporting director Francesc Arnau, who has identified García’s youth and winning mentality as key elements to get the club back on track after the Copa del Rey loss to Córdoba and a run of results that has left the club 12th in La Liga.

No Salzburg release clause

Málaga have opened negotiations but they will not prove to be easy. García has no release clause in his contract at the Red Bull Arena and although sources consulted by AS state that the coach is keen on the idea, his current club will be less enamoured. García joined Salzburg in December 2015 and led the side to a league and cup double and the side currently sit second in the Austrian Bundesliga, two points behind Rheindorf Altach.

Although his profile is to the taste of the board, García has never managed in La Liga before and could prove to be a bit of a gamble.

Sergio González and Rubi also under consideration

Málaga are therefore also considering other alternatives. Sergio González and Rubi are possible candidates and both have been approached by the club should a move for García fail to bear fruit.
