Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola, surprised many this week when he hinted at an early retirement from the dugout and suggested that Manchester City would be his last job. Regardless of the reasoning behind Pep's decision to say this, it caused a stir and people have been theorising since as to what his motives are.

Guardiola also said that he would not be in the dugout until he is 60 or 65 and many believe that he is not interested in long term projects. In the same interview with NBC, he said he was fascinated by the American workplace culture where people work for a few years at a job before moving to pastures anew.

Pep's motives

One of the Manchester City manager's peers, Fabio Capello, believes he has an answer to why Pep said this. He told Sky Sports, "I believe Guardiola already has an idea in his mind. I think he will return to Barcelona as the club's president." In this way, the former Barcelona player and manager would still be tied to football without much of the stress and publicity that is attached to being a manager. He would also not be the first former player to be touted as a future president. Guardiola himself said he would vote for Gerard Piqué should he ever run for the role.

Capello says he knows why Guardiola would not remain in coaching for long,"When you advocate a football identity like he does, rivals begin to know your plan and figure out how to counteract it in the future.
