After his run to the final of the Australian Open Rafa Nadal has said he is looking forward to the rest of the season after overcoming a series of injuries that curtailed his 2016 campaign.

"I think this could be a great year"

Speaking in public at a publicity event in A Coruña for the first time since his loss to Roger Federer in Melbourne, the world number six said: “I really enjoyed playing tennis in that month [January] and I have taken a step in the right direction. I’m excited for the rest of the season and I think this could be a great year.”

"Of course I'd like to be president"

During the act, where Nadal was handed a Deportivo shirt from club president Tino Fernández, Nadal was asked about his longer term plans and if he would consider one day standing for president of Real Madrid, the club he supports. “You never know what will happen. Everybody knows that I love football and that Real Madrid is my team. Talking about that now is a bit of a utopia but if you ask me, of course I would like to be president. In any case, we’re doing just fine as we are, we have a great president and I don’t think Real Madrid need me for anything.”
