Yeray Álvarez has renewed his contract with Athletic Club de Bilbao until June 2022, just days after making an emotional comeback for the club following a testicular cancer scare.

The 22-year old defender was diagnosed with the illness back in December 2016 forcing him to undergo an operation and treatment which kept him out of action for nearly two months.

Buy-out clause now €30m

However the highly-rated centre-back has now made a full recovery, rounding off his happy turnaround with a new deal at the Basque club following his return to action at Camp Nou against Barcelona on Saturday.

As part of the contract extension, Athletic have risen the player’s buy-out clause to €30m.

Yeray will give a press conference on the afternoon of Thursday 9 February.
