Police have arrested one suspect over three explosions that rocked the Borussia Dortmund team bus on Tuesday, it has been confirmed.

Three devices were detonated by the side of Dortmund's coach as it headed to the Bundesliga club's stadium, Signal Iduna Park, for a Champions League quarter-final match against Ligue 1 outfit AS Monaco.

Prosecutor: "We can be happy nothing worse happened"

"Two suspects from the Islamist spectrum have become the focus of our investigation," said public prosecutor Frauke Koehler on Wednesday. "Both of their apartments were searched, and one of the two has been detained."

Revealing that explosives used "contained metal shards", Koehler added: "We can be happy that nothing worse happened."

"We are treating this incident as a terrorist attack," the prosecutor continued. "An Islamic background is possible."

Koehler said that three letters found on the scene claiming responsibility for the blasts indicated links to so-called Islamic State.

Player and police officer injured in incident

One player, Marc Bartra, was injured and taken to hospital, where he underwent surgery for a broken bone in his right wrist and a foreign object in his arm.

A police officer travelling by motorbike behind the bus was also injured.

Champions League match rearranged

Dortmund's game against Monaco has been rescheduled for 18:45 CEST on Wednesday evening.
