Atlético Madrid have reached an agreement with manager Diego Pablo Simeone that will see the Argentinean remain at the club for at least the next two seasons, according to reports from Spanish broadcaster Cadena Ser.

Simeone’s contract at Atlético has been subject to changes recently, with the 47-year-old originally tied to the club until 2020, only to then reduce the length of his deal (with a pay rise) to run until 2018. Now, Atlético have reportedly persuaded Simeone to commit to the club beyond next summer with the only incognito being whether he has agreed to remain until 2019 or 2020.

Atlético were eager to tie Simeone down for the length of his initial contract but the Argentinean preferred to agree to a rolling annual deal, which would in the first instance would run until 2019 only.

Simeone returned to the Calderón, where he won a league and cup double as a player, in January 2012 as a replacement for the outgoing Gregorio Manzano. In his first half season he led Atlético to the Europa League title and he has since added a Liga, a Copa del Rey, a Spanish Supercup and a European Supercup to Atlético’s trophy cabinet, in addition to leading the club to two Champions League finals.

PSG and Inter interest

Both PSG and Inter, where he also served as a player, had expressed their interest in acquiring the Argentinean’s services and although he has made no secret of his desire to take charge of the Serie A club at some point in his career, Simeone has now elected to remain in LaLiga for at least another two seasons.
