Karim Benzema came back from the Christmas break carrying a knock. Apparently this was something he picked up during the game against Barcelona where he was virtually anonymous for the 0-3 defeat. The French forward eventually got over the injury and was involved in the home game against Deportivo la Coruña at the Bernabeu coming on as sub to a barrage of whistles from the home crowd.
He started and was on target for Real Madrid in the cup game against Leganes but delivered a discreet performance as Zidane's men were eliminated from the Spanish Cup. He stared in Mestalla and was active for the first 45 minutes of the contest but once again went missing for the second period and was subbed by the French coach, in a move which didn't go down too well with the player. Will Karim be named in the starting XI for the game against Levante? Does he deserve to be? Why is Benzema always a starter for Zidane?
We could suppose that with all three components of the Bale, Benzema, Cristiano trident fit again, the French coach is anxious for the trio to secure as much playing time together as possible as the key PSG game looms closer. This supposition does little for the morale of the squad players who have been knocking at the door. Who, based purely on merit deserves to be a starter for Real Madrid: Lucas Vázquez or Benzema? The Galician player delivers on every occasion but knows that come the next game he'll be back on the substitutes bench. How does the player feel knowing that he will always play second fiddle to Zidane's "favourite". When Benzema plays well, there is no debate about his starting position...but when he's lacking top form as is the current case...just ask Isco or Asensio their view on the matter.
