RUSSIA 2018
Who's set to be Argentina's No. 9 at Russia 2018?
Both Lautaro Martínez and Higuaín bagged hat-tricks over the weekend and along with Icardi and Aguero providing the Argentine manager with a predicament.
With just over four months to go before Russia 2018 gets underway, the Argentina national team are faced with a pleasant problem in that they have too many in-form strikers which is posing a conundrum for national team coach Jorge Sampaoli.
With the presence of Leo Messi a given in any Argentina starting line-up with it appearing likely the Barcelona player will be accompanied by the likes of Ángel Di María and/or Paulo Dybala in a deeper attacking role, the selection problem arises in the target man position with four players staking a strong claim for the No. 9 shirt.
Gonzalo Higuaín
"Pipita" bagged three goals in Juventus' home win against Sassuolo (7-0) on Sunday. The striker has now managed to hit the target on 13 occasions in the current 2017/18 Serie A campaign and recorded 17 strikes in all competitions.
Mauro Icardi
The Inter striker worked his way back into the Argentine national team after a bright start to the current Italian season. The black and blue side of Milan have faltered in recent weeks and Icardi has yet to hit the target since January 5th when he scored against Fiorentina. Despite his mini-drought, the striker has bagged 18 goals in 22 Serie A matches this season.
Sergio Agüero
The Manchester City forward is having a spectacular season being instrumental in steering Guardiola's side to the top of the Premier League and into the last 16 of the Champions League where the face Swiss side FC Basel. "El Kun" has been on target 17 times in the domestic campaign and has struck on 24 occasions in all competitions.
Lautaro Martínez
The new Racing star is the latest player to stake a claim for the centre forward shirt in Russia as Sampaoli watched on whilst his goals secured a win for the men from Avellaneda in their domestic game against Huracán last weekend. The 20-year-old is also creating a stir on the radar of many top European sides with both Real Madrid and Atleti interested in securing his signature.
