Paco López, the new coach of Liga strugglers Levante, has admitted that “the truth cannot be denied” and said that his side have to be “champions of a league of four” in order to secure Primera survival this season after being promoted at the end of the 2016-17 campaign.

Levante are 17th in Primera after a run of 15 games without victory, which was sufficient for the Ciutat de Valencia board to part company with Juan Ramón López Muñiz last weekend after a last-gasp Espanyol equaliser in the most recent round of fixtures ensured that miserable run continued. Las Palmas, Deportivo and Málaga currently occupy the relegation places.

“We are convinced we will stay up and we have to win this league of four. Behind that is hard work, commitment and belief, and it’s clear we have plenty of that,” López said in his first press conference as manager of the senior side after his promotion from the reserves until the end of the season.

López’s task begins with an away game against Getafe on Saturday, a side who have proven difficult to beat at their home stadium this season. “The feeling I have and the information I have been given is that we have a good spirit in the dressing room and the players have shown me that. We have a dedicated group of players who are willing to work hard and we are optimistic. All we have changed is for the players to start using the word "enjoyment" instead of suffering,” López said, adding that he would put out an “adventurous, bold and decisive” team against Getafe.

The idea we have is clear. We have tried to put the message across to the players to be bold, to try and create scoring chances, but then there is an opposition team in front of us and what they will attempt against us.”
