Atlético have opened talks with Antoine Griezmann with the hope that they can persuade him to stay at the club next season. The club doesn't want to hear any more discussion about the forward and his future - as gossip will only have a negative effect on the player's performance out on the field of play. Griezmann has already suffered a dip in form this season as a result of being at the centre of the media spotlight and the club is keen to keep him focused as the decisive part of the campaign begins.

New contract on the table, buy-out to be increased

Atlético have been in contact with Griezmann and his representatives with a view to understanding how committed he is to seeing through his contract. The club is prepared to offer him an improved contract and raise his buy-out fee. Griezmann is aware of what has been offered and in return has sent positive messages back. Atleti want him to continue as the team's reference in attack and are promising to bring in four world class players to strengthen the squad for next season.

That hasn't been the only work being done inside the club offices - Atleti have also discussed their stance on Griezmann with Barcelona. Barça have been very clear about their position: the Catalans say they will continue with the same respect they have always shown towards Atlético, although if Griezmann does put in a transfer request, they want to be informed. In essence it is a gentleman's agreement between clubs: Barcelona promise that they will not make any approaches, but if Griezmann decides it's time to move on, they will be the first to know.

"I still have a lot to learn from Simeone"

Griezmann spoke about his future from the France camp in Paris: “Whether I stay at Atlético or not, the decision has to be taken before I go to the World Cup. I want to go to Russia without anything on my mind. I'm fine, I want to win trophies and I think I can do that in my team. And I also have a lot to learn from Simeone”.
