Gabriel Jesus gave Manchester City hope of a comeback until Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino sealed Liverpool's place in the Champions League semi-final.
City started the match at a frenetic pace, every bit as dominant as Liverpool were at the same stage in the first leg. When Raheem Sterling squared the ball for Jesus to tuck home after two minutes, it looked like the unthinkable might just happen. The home side continued to suffocate Liverpool. Pep Guardiola selected a top-heavy team with three defenders. The result was a swarm of attackers around the Liverpool area.
A game that had simmered from the start boiled over just before half time. The lively Bernardo Silva scurried in off the right and slammed a shot against the post on 42 minutes. On the brink of the interval, James Milner knocked the ball towards his own goal and Leroy Sane bundled the ball in to the net, only to see the linesman raise his flag. Several minutes of frantic rule-checking ensued. "If the ball comes from a clearance, the player standing in an offside position becomes onside," AS's resident referee Eduardo Iturralde explained. "If it bounces [off Milner], he isn't played onside." Only Milner knows whether he intended to clear the ball.
Guardiola watched his side exit the competition from the stands, having been sent off for arguing with referee Mateu Lahoz during the break. Salah took advantage of slack handling from Ederson to score the crucial away goal after 55 minutes. 20 minutes later, Firmino rolled the ball in to the corner of the net, and Jürgen Klopp's Liverpool roll in to the last four.
