Atlético Madrid and Spain legend Fernando Torres has confirmed that he is to join Japanese club Sagan Tosu on a free transfer.

Torres chooses Japan over options in US, Australia

Having returned for a second spell at boyhood club Atlético in January 2015, Torres left Los Rojiblancos at the end of last season.

The striker had also been linked with moves to the United States and Australia.

"I'm going to get a lot out of playing in Japan"

"Sagan Tosu were one of the first teams to show an interest in me," he said on Tuesday. "I'm grateful for their persistence and the confidence they've shown in me.

"I think I'm going to get a lot out of playing in Japan. I've always been treated phenomenally in Asia and Sagan Tosu have made a big effort [to sign me]."

In total, the 34-year-old, who has also played for Liverpool, Chelsea and AC Milan during his career, scored 121 goals in 348 appearances for Atlético.

He netted 38 times in 110 caps for the Spanish national team, winning the 2010 World Cup and the 2008 and 2012 European Championships with La Roja.
