SPANISH SUPER CUP

Sevilla-Barcelona: Spanish Super Cup to be held in Tangier

The 2018 Spanish Super Cup will be the first to be played outside of Spain, and will switch from its usual two-legged format.

Sevilla-Barcelona: Spanish Super Cup to be held in Tangier

The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has confirmed that the 2018 Spanish Super Cup is to be held at Stade Ibn Battouta in Tangier, Morocco, on 12 August.

First Spanish Super Cup held on foreign soil

The clash, played by double winners Barcelona and Copa del Rey runners-up Sevilla, will be the first Super Cup to take place outside of Spain. The trophy has also never before been contested over a single match.

Sunday's announcement brings to an end a saga sparked by the two clubs' inability to agree on dates for a two-legged tie as a result of their other commitments in August.

Despite opposition from Sevilla, this led the RFEF to break with the Super Cup's usual home-and-away format.

Stadium inaugurated by Atlético in 2011

In a statement, the RFEF said that the 45,000-capacity Stade Ibn Battouta, which was inaugurated in 2011 in a friendly involving LaLiga club Atlético Madrid, "is one of a range of modern stadiums boasted by our neighbouring country".

Super Cup to kick off at 22:00 Spanish time

The match, which will be the 35th edition of the Spanish Super Cup, will kick off at 21:00 local time (22:00 CEST).
