Simeone tries out Griezmann in Super Cup starting 11
Diego Simeone tested out what will likely be his starting 11 for the UEFA Super Cup, in the team's final training session before they flew to Tallinn this Monday afternoon.
Atlético had their final training session behinds closed doors this Monday morning before they flew to Tallinn, Estonia Monday afternoon ahead of the UEFA Super Cup final on Wednesday night.
The session lasted a little more than an hour and a half, during which Diego Simeone took the opportunity to test out his probable starting eleven for the game against Madrid. The Argentine coach coupled Costa and Griezmann up front, with the rest of the 11 formed by Oblak in goal; Juanfran, Godín, Giménez, Filipe in defence; and Lemar, Rodrigo, Saúl and Koke in midfield.
So it seems that Griezmann, who made his first appearance of the preseason against Inter last Saturday, will start the game, although it is unknown if he is fit enough to play a full 90 minutes. The World Cup winner has only participated in a few sessions since returning to training last Monday, 6 July. The team also includes new signings Rodrigo and Lemar, who look set to start their first competitive fixture for Los Rojiblancos.
Atlético left Madrid’s Barajas Airport at 15.15 (CEST), with Real leaving a little later at 16.30. Tomorrow they will test out the grass at the A. Le Coq Arena, which hosts Wednesday’s clash. It will be the first time the European Super Cup will be played against teams from the same city, and third time the two clubs have met in a European final outside of Spain, after Lisbon in 2014 and Milan in 2016.
