Egyptian giants Al-Ahly sack French coach Patrice Carteron

Egyptian giants Al-Ahly have fired coach Patrice Carteron after the team was eliminated from the Arab Club Champions Cup on Thursday. The Cairo giants were held to a 1-1 by Emirati side Al Wasl, a result that knocked them out from the round of 16. Also, two weeks ago, Al-Ahly were beaten 4-3 over two legs by Esperance Tunis in the CAF Champions League final.

Carteron had only been appointed in June, after the sacking of Hossam El-Bardy. The Frenchman led the Cairo team in 21 games across all competitions, winning 12, drawing five and losing three. The team’s fitness coach, Michael Lindeman was also sacked.

“The Al-Ahly board of directors have decided to dismiss coach Patrice Carteron and the team's fitness coach Michael Lindeman," read a club statement.

Mohamed Youssef takes charge temporarily

Al-Ahly’s assistant coach, Mohamed Youssef, has been elected to take the reigns of the team on a temporary basis until a permanent replacement is found. Youssef is not new to the team, as he previously guided them to CAF Champions League glory in the 2013 campaign, when they defeated South Africa’s Orlando Pirates in the final.

The team is currently preparing for their next game against Al-Mokawlon Al-Arab in Week 16 of the Egyptian League on Tuesday.
