Leicester defender Daniel Amartey has been handed a three-and-a-half year extension with the club, a deal which will keep him at the King Power Stadium until the summer of 2022.

The 23-year-old Ghana international joined the Foxes on a four-year-deal from FC Copenhagen for £6m in January 2016.

'I am very happy to sign this contract at Leicester City,' Amartey told the club’s TV.

Until now, he has made 64 appearances for the club, featuring in nine Premier League games and one League Cup tie this season.

Still recovering

Amartey is currently recovering from an ankle injury picked up in October’s match against West Ham United.

'I first have to recover from my injury. I pray to God to recover and when I come back, I have to be strong with a strong mentality, I must work hard, and do my best,' said Amartey.

'I have to do more, work hard and do more, to show to my club. I want to thank the chairman. I was sad I got an injury and this happened to my chairman, so it was difficult.”

At the international level, the defender made his debut for Ghana against Senegal in 2015 and has gone on to make a total of 22 appearances for his country, including Ghana’s brilliant campaign at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, where they reached the final.
