Cesc Fàbregas appeared to bid an emotional farewell to Stamford Bridge on Saturday as a move to Monaco to be reunited with his former Arsenal teammate Thierry Henry moves ever closer.

The 31-year-old midfielder captained Chelsea during the Premier League side’s 2-0 FA Cup victory over second-tier Nottingham Forest and was substituted towards the end of the game to an ovation from the home support. Fàbregas left the pitch in tears and put his hand over the club crest on his shirt as he made way for N’Golo Kanté with Chelsea fans on their feet to pay homage to the player, who joined from Barcelona in 2014.

Fàbregas to reunite with Thierry Henry at Monaco

Fàbregas has been linked with a move from Stamford Bridge for some time after finding his playing time limited since the arrival of Maurizio Sarri last summer. So far this season he has featured for a little over 1,000 minutes, starting just one Premier League game and being mostly used in the Europa League and EFL Cup.

It is widely expected that Fàbregas will join Monaco in the coming days, with Henry keen to add some experience to his struggling side and turning to his former club teammate to rescue a season that has seen the 2016-17 Ligue 1 champions slip into the relegation zone while also crashing out of the Champions League without winning a single game.
