Depay has Madrid move at heart

One of the key players currently at Lyon, as well as a fundamental part of the dramatic resurrection of the Dutch national team, Depay spoke to Helden magazine about his future.

"Lyon is a great club," he announced proudly, before adding, "but it is not one of the five best teams in Europe."

More specifically, the 24-year old went on to name the clubs that he considered at the very top of the game.

"I want to go to a great club like Real Madrid, Barcelona, Chelsea, Manchester City, PSG or Bayern," including an extra name for good measure.

But despite the various footballing giants on his list, there was one that stood out for him. "I always talk about Madrid. It's a royal club, with a white and gold shirt. But right now I'm focused on Lyon...then we'll see where I end up."

Previous flirtations with Real Madrid

This is not the first time that Depay has made his feelings know about Los Blancos. Shortly after he arrived at Lyon, following his departure from Manchester United in January 2017, the forward stated:

“I think I will end up playing for Real Madrid. That is my objective. Only God knows if that will happen and he will help me.”

There is no doubt that he's a player that is catching the eye around Europe. After doubts were raised over a tepid period in the Premier League, he has relaunched his career this season with 6 goals and 12 assists for his club. He has also been integral to Ronald Koeman's international side that surprised many by reaching the UEFA Nations League Final Four at the expense of Germany and World Champions France.
