European 'Super League' inevitable, says Dortmund boss
The managing director of Borussia Dortmund has said "the revamp of the Champions League or the Super League is something that will come one way or another."
The managing director of Borussia Dortmund, Hans-Joachim Watzke, warned on Tuesday that the revamp of European competitions and the eventual creation of a Super League is inevitable.
"The revamp of the Champions League or the Super League is something that will come one way or another. What we have to do is make sure that, within it, our interests and German sentiments are taken into account as much as possible,” said Watzke in Dortmund, as quoted by Spanish news agency, EFE.
There has been great resistance to the creation of a Super League in Germany, but Watzke believes that the nation will be forced to integrate or face going it alone, which would lead to the detriment of the Bundesliga.
"Germany is not the centre of the world; nobody should believe that they will accept 90 percent of our ideas. They will say: ‘stay on your own, we will make our league without you'," he said.
Such a scenario would represent "the death of German football", according to Watze, because "if you do not participate in the whole circuit, you will not be able to develop.”
New qualification procedure "will be a mix"
Watzke supports the idea that opportunities for qualification through the national leagues should remain, but warns that this will no longer be the exclusive path to the new competition.
"There won’t only be qualification through the national leagues, there will be a mix," he stated.
Watzke recognised that there is a clash of cultures when it comes to discussions about the new Super League, explaining that other countries cannot understand why there is resistance in Germany to the idea of a the new competition being "a closed club".
