MLS tops Liga MX at the CONCACAF Gold Cup
Major League Soccer players were more precise in front of goal when compared to those from the Mexican league, for a combined total of 17 goals.
The 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup is over, with the Mexican National team winning its eighth title since 1991, overcoming the United States in the final.
Mexico increased its two Gold Cup advantage over the US by regaining its title as CONCACAF giants, however, it was Major League Soccer that dominated the tournament in terms of goals.
The 368 players present at the Gold Cup play in 54 different countries, with the US league having the most representatives in the summer championship, which resulted in them scoring more goals than the Liga MX players. The MLS stars managed a total of 17 goals at the Gold Cup, eight more than its closest rival, the Belgian Jupiler Pro League and the Liga MX.
The American league scored the most goals during the group stage with 15, with Uriel Antuna became the MLS' top scorer with four goals, followed by Gyasi Zardes who scored three, and Paul Arriola and Aaron Long helping with two more each.
Six MLS players netted one goal, helping the American league become the leader of the Gold Cup in terms of goals. They were Jozy Altidore, Bryan Acosta, Kevin Molino, Darren Mattocks, Jordy Delem and LA Galaxy midfielder, Jona dos Santos, who scored the most important goal of the tournament, the one that gave Mexico the Gold Cup title.
