Michael Parkhurst to retire at the end of the season

The 2007 Defender of the Year and 2018 MLS Cup winner will retire once the season is over - and hopes to do so as a back-to-back champion with Atlanta United.

Atlanta United will say goodbye to one of their main players once the season's over, as the centre-back Michael Parkhurst announced this Monday his retirement from an impressive football career.

Parkhurst will hang up his boots with five MLS Cup finals so far and more than two dozen appearances with the US men's national teamOne of the US league's top defenders, and arrived at Atlanta in 2017 and tasted championship glory when the Five Stripes lifted the MLS Cup last season.

The 35-year-old started his MLS career with New England Revolution, a side he helped reach three consecutive finals from 2005 to 2007. Parkhurst won Rookie of the year in 2005 and Defender of the Year in 2007.

In 2008, he made the jump to Europe with Danish side Nordsjælland, then moved to the Bundesliga with Augsburg before coming back to the United States in 2014, joining Columbus Crew SC.
