The Brazilian full back has a history of bouncing back from injury faster than expected due to his habit of not taking any risks with muscular injuries and therefore preventing and problems from being aggravated.

With that in mind, Real’s prognosis of a three-week layoff for Marcelo may be a little exaggerated and he could return earlier, but he is still a serious doubt for the Clásico.

Eden Hazard is certain miss the first Clásico of the season against Barcelona at Camp Nou and could be out for most of January after the Bernabéu medical staff issued an update on the Belgian’s injury.

Hazard limped out of the action against PSG in the Champions League and was initially diagnosed with a bruised thigh and expected to be out of action for around 10 days. However, the latest report suggests that the Belgian could be out for four to six weeks, ruling him out of the Liga fixtures against Valencia, Athletic and Barcelona, the Spanish Super Cup in Saudi Arabia and potentially the Liga clash against Sevilla at the Bernabéu.

Real Madrid issued a statement on Hazard’s injury on Thursday: "Following tests carried out on our player, Eden Hazard, by Real Madrid's medical department, the development of the perimalleolar bruising in his right leg has seen him diagnosed with an incomplete external microfracture in the aforementioned area."

Hazard suffered the initial injury in a clash with Belgium teammate Thomas Meunier on 26 November and had to leave the pitch during the match against PSG. The latest diagnosis will come as a blow both to Hazard, who has been rediscovering his best form over the past few weeks after returning from a hamstring injury, and to Madrid, who face a testing run of fixtures over the next few weeks in the Belgian’s absence.
