Stimulus checks: which states received more payments?
The IRS (Internal Revenue Service) confirmed that payments totalling almost $258 billion were made on the first wave of Economic Impact Payments.
The CARES Act, which included a first round of stimulus check payments, saw the US government pay out over $2 trillion in cash payments of up to $1,200 to Americans who qualify for the scheme.
"Economic Impact Payments have continued going out at a rapid rate to Americans across the country," said IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig. "We remind people to visit IRS.gov for the latest information, including answers to the most common questions we see surrounding the payments. We also continue to urge those who don't normally have a filing requirement, including those with little or no income, that they can quickly register for the payments on IRS.gov."
California payments
The IRS also offered a breakdown, state by state of just how much money was paid out with the most populous US state of California topping the list. With a population of over 39 million people and 16.5 million eligible claimants, the Golden State received $27,897,383,972 in payments.
At the other extreme was the state of Wyoming where 270,626 eligible claimants received $488,905,666 in payments.
