Zidane's Real Madrid had the chance to reach another landmark on Friday evening when Alavés were the guests at the Alfredo Di Stéfano. Los Blancos kicked off just one goal away from reaching 500 goals under the French coach.

Karim Benzema was the first player to score during Zidane's tenure as Real Madrid coach, finding the net against Deportivo on 9 January 2016. Since then, the team had played 206 games with Zizou at the helm, gaining 138 victories, 42 draws and 26 defeats. They had scored 499 goals and conceded 211.

Goal number 500

After an early scare from the visitors, on the 10th minute of the game, Benzema had the chance to clinch number 500 as Madrid were awarded a penalty. And he made no mistake, taking advantage of usual spot-kicker Sergio Ramos being in the stands. Here are the scorers of the other landmark goals on the way to 500: 100 (Isco against Betis, 15 October 2016); 200 (James Rodríguez against Leganés, 5 April 2017); 300 (Cristiano against Sevilla, 9 December 2017) and 400 - Benzema (against Eibar, 6 April 2019).

Only one Real Madrid coach before Zidane has had the pleasure of watching his team reach 500 goals - Miguel Muñoz, whose side reached the magical number on 15 March 1964, in his 185th game in charge (by the end of his time on the bench, his team had registered 1,226 goals in 605 games). Other coaches have come close - Del Bosque (490 goals in 246 games), Mourinho (475 goals in 178 games) and Leo Beenhakker (404 goals in 197 games).

The 500 goals which Real Madrid have scored in the Zidane era can be broken down as follows: 342 in LaLiga (141 games), 43 in the Copa del Rey (15 games), 93 in the Champions League (40 games), eight in the Spanish Super Cup (four games), five in the European Super Cup (two games) and nine at the Club World Cup (four games). Madrid have scored 262 goals at home under Zizou (including the Estadio Di Stefano), 213 away from home and 25 at neutral grounds.

Those 500 goals have come against 51 different rivals - the opponents who have conceded the most are: Celta (31), Sevilla (28), Deportivo de La Coruña (26), Real Sociedad (24), Eibar (23), Leganés (20), Valencia (20), Alavés (16), Granada (15), Espanyol (15), Betis (15), Osasuna (14), Barcelona (14), Getafe (14) and Villarreal (14).

Goal scorers. 13 of Madrid's 500 goals scored with Zidane at the helm have been own goals. The remaining 486 were scored by 32 Madrid players - Cristiano Ronaldo (112), Benzema (74), Bale (44), Sergio Ramos (29), Isco (27), Marco Asensio (22), Casemiro (19), Morata (19), Lucas Vázquez (18), James (17), Kroos (16), Marcelo (10) and Modric (10).
