Ronald Koeman said he had had less dramatic starts to most of his managerial gigs than the Barcelona job and the Dutchman is under no illusions that Osasuna will be in no mood to make his life any easier when the Navarrese side visit Camp Nou on Sunday.
“I have had quieter days at previous clubs, but I'm happy to be here. It's time to react now, and cut the distance with clubs ahead of us in the league table,” Koeman said in his pre-match press conference, reflecting on 100 days at the helm that has already seen his star player try to leave, his president step down, his team lose to Real Madrid as they adjust to a shift in playing style and endless question marks over how €120m-worth of Antoine Griezmann fits into his grand scheme. Neither, it is safe to assume, did Koeman envisage overseeing the club's joint-worst start to a Liga season since 2002-03 after six games that reaped only two wins. Koeman responded to the 1-1 draw at Alavés and his own unwanted slice of Barça infamy by pummelling Betis the following week.
Barcelona playing catch-up in LaLiga
He will need to do the same against Osasuna to prevent the title chase being run before Christmas. Barça are already 12 points off leaders Real Sociedad, albeit with two games in hand, have scored fewer than La Real, Atlético Madrid and Valencia and conceded as many as Sunday’s opponents. Normally at this stage of a season we would not be talking about 13th vs 14th at Camp Nou.
Barça looked good against Dynamo Kiev, but that was not necessarily good news for Koeman. His side in the Champions League featured a handful of regular starters backed by kids and reserves. Messi, Gerard Piqué and Frenkie de Jong remained at home. Jordi Alba, Griezmann and Ousmane Dembélé were on the bench. Barça won 4-0.
Against Osasuna normal service will be resumed. Koeman though needs what for Barça would be an abnormal result in LaLiga since 1 October: a comfortable win. Even when sticking five past Betis the sensation that the visitors were never far behind hung over Camp Nou.
Osasuna light in attack, Barcelona short at the back
Osasuna are facing their usual struggle in the top division: scoring goals. Jaboga Arrasate’s side average less than a goal per game scored and exactly one a match at the other end. They are tough to break down and will not give away anything at Camp Nou. In four away games this season, Arrasate’s side have conceded twice. In the absence of several attacking players including Chimy Avila, Adrián López and Jonathan Calleri, Osasuna are unlikely to be too expansive despite Barcelona missing Piqué, Samuel Umtiti, Sergi Roberto and Ronald Araújo at the back.
