Odegaard to have tests on leg problem

Midfielder Martin Odegaard looks set to be unavailable for Real Madrid’s crunch Champions League clash with Borussia Mönchengladbach on Wednesday, after missing training on Monday with an issue in his left leg. Madrid are to carry out tests on the Norwegian on Tuesday.

Zinedine Zidane’s men host Mönchengladbach in the final round of games in Group B knowing that a win will take them through to the last 16 and, depending on Shakhtar Donetsk’s result at Inter Milan, could even be enough to see them claim top spot.

Sergio Ramos, Carvajal in line to return

In better news for Madrid, captain and centre-back Sergio Ramos is expected to return to Los Blancos’ squad after missing their last five games with a hamstring injury, while right-back Dani Carvajal, who was sidelined with a groin injury late last month, rejoined training on Monday and may also make the Mönchengladbach game.

Striker Luka Jovic is back in contention after recovering from covid-19, but Federico Valverde (leg fracture), Mariano Díaz (knock) and Eden Hazard (hamstring) remain out.

Zidane to speak on Tuesday morning

Ahead of Wednesday’s game, Madrid boss Zidane is to speak to the media at 11:00 CET on Tuesday morning, after the 13-time European champions’ final pre-match training session. The Frenchman will be joined in the press room at Madrid’s Valdebebas training ground by an as yet unconfirmed member of his squad.

You’ll be able to follow live-text coverage of Zidane’s press conference right here at AS English.

Vázquez off to Old Trafford?

Winger Lucas Vázquez, who is out of contract at Real Madrid next summer, is being linked with a move to Premier League giants Manchester United. According to Fichajes.net, the Red Devils are readying a 15-million-euro offer to take the Spaniard to Old Trafford in January.

Vázquez, 29, has played 12 times and scored once for Madrid this season, with many of his appearances coming as a makeshift right-back amid the prolonged injury absences of recognised right-sided defenders Carvajal and Álvaro Odriozola.

Milinkovic-Savic, Szoboszlai…

In other transfer news, Calcio Mercato reports that Real Madrid are preparing a swoop for Lazio’s Serbia international Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, while key details have emerged on the contract of RB Salzburg’s Dominik Szobozslai, who is believed to be a target for Los Merengues.

According to The Athletic, the 20-year-old midfielder has a release clause set at 25 million euros, but if he is to join another club in January he must inform Salzburg of his intention to leave the Austrian champions by 31 December.

Bild reported in recent days that Zidane has made contact with Szoboszlai in a bid to persuade him to move to the Spanish capital in the mid-season window.
