Qatar to host 2030 Asian Games, Saudi Arabia to stage 2034 edition
Qatar has been selected to host the 2030 Asian Games, while the 2034 edition is set to be held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Qatar has been chosen by the members of the General Assembly of the Olympic Council of Asia to stage the 2030 Asian Games, while the Saudi capital, Riyadh, has been selected as the host of the 2034 edition.
The 39th meeting of the General Assembly was held in the Omani capital of Muscat on Wednesday, with both Qatar and Saudi Arabia having submitted their proposals to receive the honour of hosting the highly-ranked sports event in 2030.
As competition was only limited between the two countries, the General Assembly members unanimously agreed on Wednesday that the proposal that received more votes would host the 2030 Asian Games, while the other country would organise the 2034 event.
"No winner, no loser" - OCA chief
“That means no winner, no loser,” OCA president Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah of Kuwait said, thanking the Saudi and Qatari foreign ministers and conference host Oman for helping to broker the agreement. “Thank you, Asia, for solidarity and coordination.”
The e-voting process was halted four times as per requests from the Saudi delegation, who claimed that electronic voting can allow a chance of manipulating the results of the ballot, which is why the process was finally conducted manually.
