REAL MADRID

'Sergio Ramos will listen to offers' as Lucas Vázquez also a doubt

Real Madrid have been working to secure the contract extension for three players: Luka Modric, Sergio Ramos and Lucas Vázquez, with only one commiting thus far.

Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane asked on 1 January 2021, ahead of the match against Celta Vigo, that the renewals of Sergio Ramos, Lucas Vázquez and Luka Modric be resolved as soon as possible. "We want them all… it is in the interests of everyone and good for us. I want it resolved quickly,” he said.

Sergio Ramos open to a move...PSG-Messi?

The three negotiations are at very different points. The easiest one at the moment is that of Luka Modric, and as we reported some time ago, the Croatian has committed to at least one more season at Los Blancos. He has accepted the salary that he has been offered and will soon make that official.

Putting pen to paper for the captain, however, appears to be a greater challenge. According to Josep Pedrerol on Spanish programme El Larguero, Sergio Ramos has not yet responded positively to Real Madrid's offer. Madrid have put on the table a deal that would allow the defender to continue for another two years but they have stated that it comes with a significant salary reduction, around 10% of the 15 million euros he earns per season.

And Pedrerol reveals that Florentino Pérez met with Ramos in the player’s room last Wednesday at the Hotel Huerto del Cura just a couple of hours before the match against Elche.

"It was friendly, cordial,” he says about the meeting. “Sergio said to Florentino: ‘I’m not accepting the proposal you have made to me…and from now on I will listen to offers’.

According to Pedrerol, Ramos then went on to say, “Someone from PSG has told me that they are going to create a great team with me and [Lionel] Messi.”

Florentino’s response was said to be simple: “If you have a good offer we will understand.”

Lucas Vázquez left unconvinced

The renewal of Lucas Vázquez’s contract is also at a standstill. The 29-year old has an offer from the club to extend the deal that runs out on 30 June for three more seasons, but the Spanish international is not convinced. It’s a similar situation to that of Sergio Ramos.

The tug-of-war between Real Madrid and the two players is likely to run on for a while, with other top level clubs keeping a close eye on proceedings.
