Carlos Vela not an option for Mexico at Olympics
The coach of the Mexican youth national team won the CONCACAF Olympic qualifier after defeating Honduras in a penalty shootout in the final.
For the third CONCACAF Olympic qualifier in a row, the Mexico youth national team won the tournament and obtained their ticket to Tokyo this summer. ‘El Tri’ defeated Honduras in the final and after the match he was asked about the three players above the age of 23 that could be included in the final roster for the Olympics this summer.
The coach of the senior team Gerardo Martino was also asked about the players that could be included in the Olympic squad, including the case of Carlos Vela who hasn’t played with Mexico since 2019. Martino was very clear that the Los Angeles FC player is not considered at all for Tokyo and Jaime Lozano is on the same page.
Carlos Vela is not being considered
“I agree with Gerardo Martino that when a player is committed to the national team, then he should be eligible to play for the senior or youth teams. So that is all I can say about the Carlos Vela case because we are governed by the same norms and values within,” said Lozano.
The Mexico youth national team coach said he has been in constant communication with Martino and the bosses from the Mexico Football Federation about the three players above the age of 23 that will be included in the final squad, because the senior team has to play the 2021 Gold Cup this summer as well. Lozano also said that Martino has given him the freedom to choose the players from the senior team he wants.
