Club América move top with win over Tijuana

It was not easy for Club América to move top of the table, but two late goals gave them the three points against Tijuana on matchday 6 of the 2021 Apertura tournament. Sebastián Córdova scored from the penalty spot (90+1) and Renato Ibarra sealed the victory (90+4) at the Azteca stadium on Sunday night.

América on top

This is Santiago Solari’s second tournament as manager of Club América and he has proven that he is the right man for the job. After six games they are top of the table with 16 points and a record of 5W-1D-0L.

The ‘Eagles’ have yet to lose a game, but against Tijuana it wasn’t easy for them. América have been criticized for their cautious style of play, but the most important thing is that they are winning at all costs. They had only four shots on target on Sunday night, but they controlled the game with 64% possession.

Late penalty drama

The visiting team seemed happy to share the points and in stoppage time América would make a last run to win the game. Striker Federico Viñas, received a nasty tackle inside the box in the 90th minute and the referee showed Luis Gamíz the red card and gave a penalty.

The Eagles' No 10 scored to give his team the lead. Then Renato Ibarra, who replaced Henry Martín in the second half, scored from outside the box to secure the points and the victory for América. The current leaders of the tournament will visit León on 28 August for matchday 7 of 17.
