Two games into the third round of the CONCACAF 2022 World Cup qualifiers and both Honduras and the USMNT are still looking for their first win. Both teams go into Wednesday’s game in San Pedro Sula with identical figures: played two, drawn two with one goal for and one against. Honduras held Canada to a 1-1 draw in their first outing of the round-robin qualifying stage on 3 September and followed that up with a goalless draw against El Salvador on Monday. This will be their first home game of the series and they will be looking to take all three points and move up the group where they currently sit in joint fourth alongside the United States.
Likewise, Gregg Berhalter’s USMNT have yet to find their groove and another disappointing result could see them lose sight of the teams current at the top of the table: Mexico and Panama. Under the new format, the top three teams automatically qualify for the World Cup finals while the team that finishes fourth will go into the play-offs. Berhalter’s side opened with a dismal 0-0 draw against El Salvador then picked up another point at home to Canada.
The USMNT might take heart in that they have historically performed well against Honduras. Out of the 26 times these two countries have met in both official and unofficial competition, the United States have only lost three matches, the most recent of which was over eight years ago. On the other hand, this time they will be away from home and missing some of their star players...

Honduras coach Fábian Coito is expected to make changes and field his strongest XI in a match that La H are determined to win. There were hints as to who could start the game in an intense training session at the Freedom Institute which involved Maynor Figueroa, Marcelo Pereira, Andy Najar, Eddie Hernández, Edwin Solani, Deiby Flores, Marlon Licona, Allans Vargas, Carlos Pineda, Edrick Menjívar and Diego Rodríguez. Coito made wholesale changes in the first two games and could do the same this time in a bid to surprise Berhalter. Winger Edwin Rodríguez took a knock in the El Salvador game and underwent physiotherapy back at the team hotel, otherwise, the Bicolor are at full strength.
The USNT meanwhile will have some absentees. Goalkeeper Zack Steffen is self-isolating after testing positive for Covid-19, his place will be occupied by Matt Turner. Gio Reyna is ruled out after pulling his right hamstring during the Canada game. Sergiño Dest also misses out after suffering a sprain to his right ankle while Weston McKennie was withdrawn from the squad after breaching Covid-19 protocol and has flown back to Italy.
