It’s an NFC East showdown to start the second week of the NFL regular season as the New York Giants travel to the national capital to take on the Washington Football Team.

NFC East was worst in league last year

The NFC East was historically bad last year, as no team finished with a record above .500. It was the Washington Football Team who advanced to the playoffs by default after a 7-9 season. Washington went on to play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and almost pulled off a shock victory over the soon to be Super Bowl champions.

Neither New York, nor Washington started off the season the way they were hoping in Week 1. The Giants only scored one touchdown through the first three quarters of their season opener.

Barkley returns for NY

The good news for New York was the much anticipated return of Saquon Barkley, who missed the majority of last season with a torn ACL. The bad news was Barkley and the rest of the Giants rushers had just 60 total yards in a 27-13 home loss to the Denver Broncos.

Washington had a disastrous start to their season as their starting quarterback, Ryan Fitzpatrick, exited the game with a hip injury after being hit by San Diego Chargers defensive end Uchenna Nwosu. Fitzpatick threw six passes before being forced off the field.

Heinicke will start Thursday

Back up quarterback Taylor Heinicke, who was under center for the playoff game against the Bucs last season, came in and provided a spark to the Washington offense going 11-15 with 122 yards and a touchdown.

Heinicke will start on Sunday against the Giants, as Fitzpatrick has been placed on injured reserve and is expected to miss 6-8 weeks.

When and how to watch

Washington and New York will start Week 2 of the NFL regular season at 8:20 p.m. ET, 5:20 p.m. PT from FedEx Field on Thursday, September 16th. The game will be broadcast live on NFL Network.
