Houston's Mills will be fourth rookie QB to start this year
Davis Mills will take over the starting role under center for the Houston Texans. Tyrod Taylor has been placed on IR after suffering a hamstring injury.
Rookie quarterbacks have been one of the top headlines in the early part of the NFL regular season. Trevor Lawrence, Justin Fields, and Mac Jones have already been tossed to the lions in their first year in the league. Houston Texans rookie Davis Mills be will be the latest rookie to start for an NFL franchise on Thursday night.
Taylor to IR after hamstring injury
Mills’ promotion comes in the wake of news that Texans starting quarterback Tyrod Taylor has been placed on injured reserve after suffering a hamstring injury in Sunday’s loss to the Cleveland Browns.
Mills will certainly be the most low profile rookie to start at quarterback to this point of the season. Five signal callers were taken in the first round of the NFL draft, but Mills didn’t get selected until the early parts of the third round.
Mills was the seventh QB taken in 2021 NFL Draft
He was the seventh quarterback taken in spring selection show, behind the five QBs that went in the first round. Kyle Trask was scooped up in the second round and Kellen Mond was taken right before Mills with the 66th overall pick.
Mills went to Stanford after being rated the top quarterback prospect coming out of high school in 2017. In just 13 career college games as the Cardinal starter Mills threw for almost 3,500 yards and 18 touchdown. He also set the Stanford record for most passing yards in a single game with 504 against Washington State.
Watson remains sidelines amidst legal troubles
The Texans quarterback problems went from bad to worse on Tuesday the Tayor was put on the IR. This comes after an offseason that saw the face of the Texans franchise come under heavy scrutiny after 22 civil lawsuits were filed against the Deshaun Watson. The Houston QB has been accused sexual assault and misconduct directed at massage therapists that say he acted in inappropriate ways during their sessions.
Watson is on the teams inactive lists, as he continues to seek a trade
Mills entered the game last week against the Browns after Taylor injured his hamstring. In two quarters, Mills went 8/18 for 102 yards with a touchdown and an interception.
Mills will have a short week to prepare for the Carolina Panthers, who they will play on Thursday night in Houston. Wide receiver Antony Miller will most likely be available as he recovers from a shoulder injury, but Mills could be without Danny Amendola who is recovering from a thigh injury.
