Gigi Donnarumma set for UCL debut with PSG against Manchester City
PSG manager Mauricio Pochettino said ‘there’s a good atmosphere’ between Navas and Donnarumma as they fight for the starting role.
Paris Saint-Germain signed big names ahead of the 2021/22 campaign and one of them was Gigi Donnarumma, who won the 2020 Euro with Italy over the summer, even though they already had a world-class goalkeeper in their roster, Keylor Navas. Both players have been fighting for the starting role and PSG manager Mauricio Pochettino said "there’s a good atmosphere" between them.
“Donnarumma? We have two great goalkeepers,” Pochettino said at a press conference. “They adapt to the needs of the squad. At the moment we are satisfied. A goalkeeper always wants to play, like any footballer. They are training well, there’s a good atmosphere. Of course, we need to find the right balance.”
Donnarumma to make his UCL debut
Keylor Navas has seen the majority of minutes early in the season with six appearances, six goals conceded and two clean sheets in Ligue 1. The Costa Rican goalkeeper from also played against Club Brugge in the 1-1 draw in the UEFA Champions League group stage opener.
Donnarumma, meanwhile, has seen the majority of games from the bench, but he made his debut with PSG on matchday 5 in PSG’s 4-0 home win against Clermont Foot. The Italian goalkeeper played his second league game the following matchday in the team’s 2-1 against Olympique Lyon. Now it appears that Pochettino is ready to give Gigi Donarumma a shot in the UCL when PSG hosts Manchester City at the Parc de Princes on Tuesday night, which will be his debut in Europe’s most important tournament.
