Argentina will try to maintain their unbeaten start to World Cup 2022 qualifying against Peru in Buenos Aires on Thursday. Lionel Scaloni's men defeated Uruguay 3-0 in their most recent match, while their visitors were beaten 1-0 by Bolivia.

The hosts, who thrashed neighbors Uruguay thanks to Lionel Messi, Rodrigo de Paul and Lautaro Martínez’s goals, are sitting second in the standings with 22 points - six wins and four draws - six points behind leaders Brazil.

Messi's 38th-minute opener marked his 80th international goal, seeing him become the first South American to hit that landmark.

Argentina unbeaten at home for the last five years

Their win over Uruguay marked their third clean sheet in succession in World Cup qualifying. Moreover, the Copa América winners haven’t tasted defeat in their last 24 matches across all competitions, so they will try to add another victory to their resume and avoid a first home defeat since October 2016.

Meanwhile, Peru, seventh in the standings with 11 points, didn't take advantage of their 2-0 win against Chile before travelling to Bolivia, who came out on top with a 1-0 win despite going down to 10 men on home soil.

With only two wins from their last seven games in all competitions - four consecutive defeats away from home - the chances of Ricardo Gareca's side making it back-to-back appearances at a World Cup finals are slimming.

Three of the last five encounters between Argentina and Peru have ended in a draw, but Messi & co. emerged victorious with a 2-0 result during the most recent fixture in November 2020, while the visitors have not beaten their upcoming opponents since 1997.
