Loris Karius' nightmare is almost at an end

Liverpool have decided to release German goalkeeper Loris Karius, The Mirror reports. The 28-year-old keeper, who has not played an official game for the Reds since his ill-famed performance in the 2018 Champions League final, has spent the last two seasons out on loan at Besiktas and Union Berlín. His display in the final, in which his mistakes led to two of the three goals scored by Real Madrid, more or less sounded the death knell for his career at Anfield.

Later that summer he was loaned out to Besiktas, where he signed a two-year contract. In Turkey, he held down a starting place in the side although the club decided against exercising their option to buy the player at the end of the deal. That was followed by a return to the Bundesliga. He joined Union Berlin in September 2020, but made just five appearances for the club last season.

Karius eyeing January move

This summer he was unable to find a new club, despite interest from a number of clubs - no deal materialised for various different reasons, the keeper explained in an interview with Bild. So he returned to Liverpool, where he is behind Alisson, Adrián and Caoimhin Kelleher in the pecking order. He hasn't featured in a single squad list this season. When the winter transfer window opens on 1 January, he will be free to sign for the club of his choice.
