Santos Laguna advance to the quarter finals after beating Atlético San Luis
Ayrton Preciado and Ignacio Jeraldino scored for Santos Laguna to hand them victory at Estadio Nuevo Corona. They will face Tigres in the next round.
Santos Laguna are convinced that they can win their seventh league title, but first they had to survive the Liga MX Wildcard weekend. They hosted Atlético San Luis on Saturday and were dominant throughout, winning the game 2-0 at Estadio Nuevo Corona.
Late goals gave Santos the win
Both clubs struggled to find the back of the net in the first 45 minutes. Ayrton Preciado had a couple of chances before the break but both of them were cleared by goalkeeper Marcelo Barovero.
Santos Laguna were the most dominant team in the first half and they were close to scoring the opening goal. It was not until the 65th minute that Preciado received a through ball to leave him one-on-one with Barovero and he would find the back of the net to give Santos the lead.
The home side kept pushing to secure the victory and late in the second half the ball hit Jair Diaz’ arm. The referee awarded a penalty and Ignacio Jeraldino stepped up and beat Barovero from the spot to give Santos a 2-0 win. With this result they advanced to the quarter finals and they will face Tigres UANL.
