Barcelona vs Benfica: preview, times, TV and how to watch online

Barcelona host Benfica in a decisive match for both teams: a place in the Champions League round of 16 is at stake at Camp Nou on Tuesday 23 November.

Update:
The Catalan giants host Benfica in a decisive match for both teams: a place for the Champions League's round of 16 is at stake at Camp Nou on Tuesday.

Barcelona and Benfica will go head-to-head in what will likely be the game to decide which side secures a place in the Champions League last 16 and who goes into the Europa League.

Although there are two matches still remaining before the knockout stages, a victory for Barcelona, second in Group E on six points behind the Bayern Munich steamroller – two more than Benfica - would see the Catalans among the best 16 teams in the continent.

However, the picture could be very different if the hosts don’t emerge victorious: a draw would mean that Xavi’s men would need to beat Bayern - in Munich - to make sure they go through whereas defeat would leave the Blaugrana needing to beat Bayern and hope Benfica draw or lose against Dinamo Kyiv in Portugal.

Barcelona will be looking for a measure of revenge on Jorge Jesus’ side after suffering a painful 3-0 defeat in Lisbon when the sides met earlier in the group in matchweek two.

When many fans thought Barcelona’s fate was the Europa League, the Catalan powerhouses beat Dinamo 1-0 at Camp Nou and achieved the same result in Ukraine two weeks later. Now they depend on themselves to make it to the round of 16.

Will Xavi pick up a second win as a coach?

Xavi would be happy to settle for last Saturday's scoreline, when Barcelona defeated city neighbors Espanyol 1-0 in his debut as the club’s coach, Memphis Depay converting a contentious penalty in the 48th minute to secure victory.

The Catalan outfit go into the match with a four-game unbeaten run in all competitions and they have scored in each of their last seven at home.

Meanwhile, Jesus's side, who have only won one of their last 10 Champions League games away from Lisbon, will try to surprise the hosts again but Benfica may have to make do with a spot in the Europa League if they can’t leave Barcelona with a win in the bag.

The visitors were able to rest a number of their key players on Friday for their Taça de Portugal showdown with Paços Ferreira and still won by a comfortable 4-1.
