Many stores around the US accept food banks or SNAP benefits, crucial for those who receive the support that they can use them.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) has existed in some form since 1933. 1 in 7 Americans are enrolled in the program, making it the largest food help program in the country.

SNAP benefits, as well as the distribution of food stamps, often uses Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards. These store the money needed to pay for food, but they cannot be used everywhere. The Department of Agriculture has a set of requirements that precludes many businesses from accepting EBT cards.

However, most supermarkets are likely to be on the Department's list.

Here is a list of some of the biggest stores that accept food tokens:

  • Albertsons
  • Aldi
  • BJ's Wholesale Club
  • Costco
  • City Market
  • Food Lion
  • Harris Teeter
  • Kroger
  • Market Basket
  • Piggly Wiggly
  • Publix
  • Safeway
  • Schwan's Fine Food
  • Sprouts
  • Save A Lot
  • Target
  • Stop & Shop
  • Trader Joe's
  • Walmart

Changes to SNAP benefits in 2022

The pandemic has put SNAP benefits under the spotlight. Food insecurity has risen and many people have been pushed into poverty, a fact not helped by the termination of the expanded Child Tax Credit at the turn of the year.

Therefore, there is an increase of the SNAP benefit allowance for 2022

“If [beneficiaries] live in the 48 contiguous states and Washington, D.C., families of four will receive a maximum of $835,” said Yvette D. Best, author, tax coach and owner of Best Tax Solutions LLC.

“A family of four will receive a maximum of $1,074-$1,667 in Alaska; a family of four will receive a maximum of $1,573 in Hawaii; a family of four will receive a maximum of $1,231 in Guam; a family of four will receive a maximum of $1,074 in the US Virgin Islands.”

Further support is likely to be forthcoming if President Biden can get anything through Congress. His Build Back Better plans, aimed at tackling inflation while also providing a boost to US families, has undergone no progress since before Christmas.
