Every rookie coming out of college and going into the NFL Draft is subjected an IQ test of sorts called the Wonderlic. The exam is used as a barometer that NFL executives use to asses the upcoming draft class members mental aptitude before the selection show.

Ever wonder about the Wonderlic?

Before they become the face of the new generation, rising stars of the NCAA must go through a series of tests, both physical and mental. The Wonderlic is like a combine for the mind. The exam, which is used not just by the NFL, but corporations around the world.

Rookies are tested on their cognitive and problem solving ability, and are measured on a scale from 1-50. A perfect score of 50 is rare but achievable.

Landry introduced it to the league in the 70s

Dallas Cowboys coach Tom Landry was the first to use the method when evaluating potential players to fit into his team back in the 70s. Since then the test has become a standard in the pre draft process, although there has been talk of getting rid of the Wolderlic all together.

Only one player in NFL history has scored a perfect 50 on the test. That was Pat McInally, a punter selected by the Cincinnati Bengals in the 1975 draft. McInally went on to have a successful career in which he made one Pro Bowl and went to the Super Bowl with the Bengals.

Washington Commanders QB Ryan Fitzpatrick had a 48 on the aptitude test, and has been in the league for longer than fifteen year. On the contrary, Frank Gore scored a six on the Wonderlic and finished his career as the third leading rusher in NFL history.
